Social Enterprise

Social Enterprise encompasses social purpose businesses, often goods or services sold to earn income to support the mission of a non profit, though sometimes the business is for profit. There is typically a material cost to profits; some hit to the bottom line, to support the social mission of the business. Typical social enterprises include businesses that work with some sort of at risk population, such as low income inner city youths, former homeless, ex convicts or addicts, or handicapped people and include training and other kinds of workforce readiness programs that add costs, including matched saving accounts, social workers, tutors, etc.

The Digital Vision Program supports individuals who seek to develop technology-based solutions in the interest of humanitarian, educational, and sustainable development goals. The Program fosters social entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary projects that address real needs in underserved communities. DV projects focus on the rapidly evolving mix of software applications that leverage advanced wireless and land-based data networks. These networks – paired to a new generation of mobile phones and low cost computer-based devices - have connected more than one billion people who previously lacked access to the innovations and cost-saving solutions made possible by digital communications, information services, and e-commerce. We have invited 16 incredibly talented social entrepreneurs to join the 2007 DVP class at Stanford. These individuals were selected out of a pool of over 525 applicants, represent 12 countries (Australia, Brazil, Colombia, India, Jamaica, Kosovo, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa, Uganda, the US, and the UK), and have an average of 12 years work experience and will work in the areas of health, education and financial services. WE NEED YOUR HELP - we are seeking funding, and in-kind gifts, to bring these social entrepeneurs to Stanford and to support them during their nine-months in the U.S. For more information on these entrepreneurs and this campaign, please see: http://rdvp.org/donate/bring Donations can be accepted for unlimited amounts, can be made for the DV Program or designated for a specific Fellow, can be personal or corporate, and are tax deductible. In-kind donations (frequent flyer miles, housing, computer equipment) are also extremely valuable. Good Capital is working to provide the research and development, structuring, set-up, subscription and eventual fund management of a potentially $30 million US social enterprise investment fund. It will raise capital from accredited individual and institutional investors in the US and place this capital into a portfolio of high performing US-based social enterprises which have both significant growth opportunities and attractive profiles regarding risk and reasonable return. The purpose of the Fund is to create significant positive social and community impact, through supplying entrepreneurs with the risk capital they need to ramp up and institutionalize their already proven operations. It aims to accomplish these ends while providing a disciplined and well-managed vehicle for its investors, and proving a new model of risk capital investment for the sector. Its purpose is to fill the risk capital gap between grants and debt funding for social enterprises; the kind of role a traditional venture capital fund plays in the traditional capital markets. It will provide a new kind of institutional capital, currently unavailable to even the highest performing social enterprises.
