Expansion Capital Partners (Expansion) is a venture capital firm that invests in expansion-stage, Clean Technology enterprises that present compelling risk-return profiles. Expansion targets companies that offer dramatic improvements in resource efficiency and productivity, while creating more economic value with less energy and materials, or less waste and toxicity. These technologies significantly lower costs to customers and improve profitability. The Fund’s areas of focus include: energy, advanced materials, water and wastewater, manufacturing, and transportation. Clean Technology comprises multi-billion dollar markets, with many segments growing at 15%-20% annually. The Fund is seeking to make $2 to $4 million initial investments in expansion stage companies. The firm’s targeted gross eturns are 25% on its portfolio (or within the top quartile of VC returns, on a risk adjusted basis). The Fund does not plan to invest in consumer, reorgs or retail. The Fund hopes to realize its gains through strategic sale, M&A and/or IPO exits. The fund’s team usually takes active Board seats. The first investment of Fund II was in Agile Systems, a Canadian based manufacturing efficiency and automation company in a $3B+ market. 2004 revenues were just over $3M CAN, representing a 30%+ increase over the previous year. CEO Ralph Steedman previously exited 3 deals successfully, including selling his most recent company, CRS Robotics, to ThermoElectron (TMO). Please inquire about their other completed investments.
