Winquest aims to develop blended-value for-benefit organizations thoughout the Middle East and North Africa region. We believe that expanding tried-and-tested US and other foreign multiple bottom line (B Corp type) companies into MENA will be the most effective way to leverage the potential of the region and achieve wide-scale multiple bottom line impact. This will provide local values minded business people with examples of successful models, it will promote mutual understanding and dispel misconceptions among westerners (particularly US) and Arabs and it will create a chain of benefits for both local and foreign companies Winquest acts as the regional development partner of US/western companies in MENA: we identify local distributors, customers, investees or franchisees, we set performance objectives on different levels, we develop the relevant business, social, environmental plans and we supervise their implementation on the ground.

The mission of The Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF) is to advance strategic Black philanthropy. In 1971, when Robert Browne, founder of The Twenty-First Century Foundation, gave the grantmaking institution its name, many people thought it was far ahead of its time. Not just because of the futuristic ring to it – Twenty-First Century, but because Browne’s depth of vision led him to establish an endowment, as the cornerstone of a permanent, renewable resource for Black community initiative. But now, the future is here, and many realize that a Black-led and governed grantmaking organization is an idea whose time has come – and it's now. 21CF was established with a million-dollar gift, which forms the basis of its endowment. Income from the endowment funds the Foundation’s national Grants Program, which continues to support Black community-based organizations in almost every region of the country working on issues such as: school reform, youth development, community empowerment and political participation. Since inception, 21CF has distributed approximately $2 million to more than 350 groups. Grants provide seed capital to support ornew initiatives, to fill the gaps in vitally needed programs, and to permit small community groups to advance to the next level of leadership and activism. In recent years, 21CF has taken a leadership role in promoting new models of Black philanthropy that support donors who want to develop the skills, commitment and imagination to address pressing issues impacting our communities.

Utilizing emerging green building practices and products, and redeveloping urban infill parcels of land in major metropolitan locales, 908 Development Group will produce the highest quality, sustainable affordable housing options, thus stimulating economic activity and job growth. These developments will generate low cost housing solutions centered around mass transportation and employment centers, allowing employers to attract and retain entry-level employees for the common benefit and growth of the community.

Social Philanthropy is philanthropy at its best: innovative, transparent, socially and environmentally responsive – and fully leveraged.

The Center for Social Philanthropy (C-SocPhil), currently being beta-tested, aims to provide research, resources, data and tools for foundations and donors seeking to maximize the long-term, social and environmental impact of their philanthropic work, not only through grant-making but also by leveraging the full range of assets at their disposal.

The idea for the C-SocPhil is based on the concept of “Fully Leveraged Philanthropy,” developed by the Center’s founding director Joshua Humphreys. Fully leveraged philanthropy means mobilizing a much fuller range of strategies to pursue long-term social impact beyond limited, year-to-year grant-making payout requirements, which typically activate little more than five percent of foundations’ total available assets, now estimated at more than $600 billion in the US alone. In addition to grants and endowment assets, foundations have a store of unrealized potential in their staff, relationships, convening power and “historical assets.”

C-SocPhil was founded by Joshua Humphreys of Harvard University following his residency at the Rockefeller Archive Center. Humphreys has taught previously at Princeton and NYU, where he completed his Ph.D. after studying as a Fulbright Scholar in Paris. He has also served as visiting research associate at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and associate fellow at the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Humphreys has advised numerous organizations, including Environmental Grantmakers Association, Green America, Green Harbor Financial, Proxy Democracy, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, the Social Investment Forum, Sustainable Endowments Institute, the World Digital Library, and the World Bank Group. His insights on trends in philanthropy, shareowner advocacy, and social and environmental investing have been widely published and cited in the press, most recently in Barron’s, the Financial Times, Financial Advisor, Fund Action, FUNDfire, GreenBiz.com, the Los Angeles Times, and the Seattle Times.

The mission of ACCION International is to give people the tools they need to work their way out of poverty. By providing "micro" loans and business training to poor women and men who start their own businesses, ACCION's partner lending organizations help people work their own way up the economic ladder, with dignity and pride. With capital, people can grow their own businesses. They can earn enough to afford basics like running water, better food and schooling for their children.

In a world where three billion people live on less than $2 a day, it is not enough to help 1,000 or even 100,000 individuals. Our goal is to bring microfinance to tens of millions of people - enough to truly change the world. We know that there will never be enough donations to do this. That's why ACCION has created an anti-poverty strategy that is permanent and self-sustaining.

The American system of government is founded on two counterbalancing principles: that the majority of the people governs, through democratically elected representatives; and that the power even of a democratic majority must be limited, to ensure individual rights.

Majority power is limited by the Constitution's Bill of Rights, which consists of the original ten amendments ratified in 1791, plus the three post-Civil War amendments (the 13th, 14th and 15th) and the 19th Amendment (women's suffrage), adopted in 1920.

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

* Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.
* Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
* Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
* Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

An international development agency whose aim is to fight poverty worldwide. Formed in 1972, for over 30 years we have been growing and expanding to where we are today - helping over 13 million of the world's poorest and most disadvantaged people in 42 countries worldwide. In all of our country programmes we work with local partners to make the most of their knowledge and experience. In December 2003 they established a new head office in Johannesburg, South Africa, and began the process of making all our country programmes equal partners with an equal say on how we operate. They work with local partners to fight poverty and injustice worldwide, reaching over 13 million of the poorest and most vulnerable people over the last year alone, helping them fight for and gain their rights to food, shelter, work, education, healthcare and a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. Their partners range from small community support groups to national alliances and international networks seeking education for all, trade justice and action against HIV/AIDS. Our work with these national and international campaign networks highlights the issues that affect poor people and influences the way governments and international institutions think. They have a unique vision and direction. We don't impose solutions, but work with communities over many years to strengthen their own efforts to throw off poverty. We constantly seek new solutions and ask ourselves how we can make the greatest impact with our resources. We make the most of our skills and abilities by working at many levels - local, national, regional and international.

ED is a bridge, a link between the problem and the solution, the need and the resource, people and their potential. Founded in 1961, AED is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems and building the capacity of individuals, communities, and institutions to become more self-sufficient. AED works in all the major areas of human development, with a focus on improving education, health, and economic opportunities for the least advantaged in the United States and developing countries throughout the world. education For more than 40 years, we at AED have approached our work in education as a means of serving society. books Starting with a project in Kansas, and eventually expanding to more than 130 countries, AED has affected the lives, and improved the educational opportunities, of thousands of students around the world. From preschool children to retirees, from one-room schools to large urban districts, we have worked in education by partnering with communities and their educational institutions to help them create innovative programs and sound policies. Environment environment AED is working with many partners to improve how people impact the health of the planet. We use our expertise in social marketing, education, communications, and advocacy to reach a wide variety of audiences in order to influence behaviors and policies affecting the environment. Health Our health is largely defined by our behavior. In the 1970s, AED launched its first healthbehavior change initiative to effectively treat diarrhea disease, a major killer of children under the age of 5 in the developing world. AED now works to change behavior--and improve health--all over the world. Our programs include mother and child nutrition, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, and malaria prevention. HIV/AIDS AED began its work in HIV/AIDS by focusing on specific sexual and drug-using behaviors performed ribbonby people who are at-risk of exposure to the virus, but who are often invisible to larger society. Today it is clear that fighting HIV/AIDS requires more than just treating infected individuals. Prevention and treatment must extend to whole families and their support systems, which is why AED continues to work to increase the effectiveness of prevention programs in the U.S. and internationally. In addition, our work in HIV/AIDS now focuses on fighting the stigma that many HIV/AIDS sufferers face in their workplaces and communities. Leadership AED draws on decades of experience in training and professional exchanges to develop leaders and leadershipstrengthen institutions worldwide. Judges, journalists, educators, legislators, and business owners who have developed new skills and insights through our programs have helped to lead government agencies, community groups, independent media, hospitals, and schools and universities. AED has played a vital role in strengthening fledgling democracies and bolstering leadership capabilities of individuals and institutions. We believe our individualized exchange and training programs have made a significant difference in promoting civil society. undefined In the United States, more than 40 million people, or about 15 percent of the total population, are between the youth3ages of 10 and 21. In many developing countries, the under-25 population makes up 50 percent or more of the total population. Often public attention, in the U.S. and elsewhere, focuses on the negative actions and outcomes of a minority of young people, in the U.S. or elsewhere. Rather than viewing young people as problems that need to be "fixed," AED sees them as partners and resources who need access to support and opportunities as they learn and mature. AED has pioneered many approaches to working constructively with youth and continues to design, guide, and evaluate initiatives and programs that affect and involve youth in many issues of critical concern.

With that in mind, AIL works to empower all Afghans who are needy and oppressed by expanding their educational and health opportunities and by fostering self-reliance and community participation. AIL’s goals are to lay a foundation for quality education and health for years to come and to provide comprehensive education and health services to Afghan women and children, so that they can support and take care of themselves AIL requires community participation in all of its projects. Believing that the best results are achieved when everyone is integrally involved, AIL works with community leaders in the planning, developing and implementation of all projects. No project is started unless the community has requested it and is involved in it. Utilizing this visionary strategy, communities now contribute 30 to 50 percent of the resources needed for a project. These community contributions have come in many forms, including donated space, materials, and supplies. These contributions have strengthened the communities’ involvement in and ownership of AIL programs. Each fund proposal will be evaluated based on the fund’s ability to make a significant contribution to social and economic development in Africa, as well as its ability to deliver positive financial returns. To foster this “double bottom line” approach, OPIC will consider innovative fund structures including, consortiums, special purpose vehicles, vehicles with first-loss or other “patient” capital, and structures or collaborative proposals with grants or technical assistance that could be used for development of portfolio companies.

The AFA leadership network emerged from the model pioneered in Ventura County since 2000. The Ventura County AFA resulted from a decision by Ventura County Farm Bureau and other agricultural leaders who realized that their future depended on broad-based buy-in from the community. Years of struggle in courts, legislative chambers, and the media had proven ineffective at maintaining and enhancing agriculture. Looking ahead, industry leaders felt that a continuous war of attrition with critics or competing interests would not achieve a viable and healthy agricultural system. A new approach, based on shared interests, dialog and collaboration was needed. Since inception, Ag Innovations has facilitated the Ventura AFA process. Since 2003, Ag Innovations has sought to develop an AFA network, based on the Ventura model, with the goal of linking up county leadership roundtables across California. This vision is based on the belief that a network of leadership networks will give local communities the ability to more effectively improve local, state and federal policies that impact agriculture, the food system, and the environment. Ag Futures Alliances are now running in the Tehachapi-Cummings Valley region of Kern County, Yolo County, and San Benito County. In November, 2006 we began working with leaders in San Mateo county to launch an AFA there. We hope to launch another AFA during 2007.

Fast. Nimble. Small. Competitive. These words not only describe a hummingbird, the symbol on AgraQuests logo, but also embody the companys style and culture. And, like the hummingbird searches for nectar from a flower, AgraQuest searches for pesticidal products from naturally occurring microorganisms.

The founders of AgraQuest believed that the natural world was fertile ground for the search and discovery of new products for pest management. More than 50% of human drugs are derived from natural sources like plants and microorganisms; but only 7% of all pesticides are derived from these sources. Since 1995, AgraQuest has proven that the natural world is an untapped source of new, and natural, pesticidal products. After discovering and screening over 20,000 microorganisms, AgraQuest has developed and commercialized a line of innovative, effective, natural products for pest management.

AgroFair was founded in 1996 by the Dutch development organisation Solidaridad. This organisation is passionate about the rights of banana workers in Latin America and about improving the way the banana industry is run financially, environmentally and socially. After successfully introducing the first Fairtrade coffee, the organisation developed and introduced the Fairtrade banana and founded AgroFair to import and market the product. Through AgroFair, Solidaridad has tried to show companies in the banana industry that it is possible to change the way they do business.

AgroFair imported the world's first Fairtrade bananas under the Oké brand into Europe in 1996. In 2002 we added Oké mangoes and pineapples to the Fairtrade fruitbowl and in 2005, Oké citrus. Currently AgroFair's market covers 13 European countries and the USA..

In its thirty years Aid to Artisans (ATA) has changed the lives of thousands of artisans through its “Market Link” program of product design, production and business skills. In developing countries, handcrafts continue to provide an important source of income, especially in rural areas and especially for women.

How We Do It - The Market Link

Through ATA and its Trade Network, artisan groups around the world have become self-sustaining. Because ATA's goal is to link the artisans to markets, we provide assistance in all stages of that process, including product development and design, business development, market entry, and working with clients.

Artisans working with ATA have sold their products through many recognized outlets such as:

- U.S. based retail chains, including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Pier 1 Imports;

- Mail order catalogs such as Smith & Hawken, Orvis, Sundance, Wisteria, Ballard Designs, and Terra Verde;

- Magazines and newspapers including Metropolitan Home, Elle Décor, House & Garden, Better Homes and Gardens, Bon Appetit, Lucky, Home Style, Victoria, Natural Home, The New York Times Magazine, USA Today and The Washington Post.

Market-Oriented Product Development

ATA helps artisans develop the business skills they need to produce products that will sell in competitive and changing world markets. We match artisans with international and local consultants who have long experience in market-oriented product design. These consultants work directly with artisan entrepreneurs and help them modify existing products or develop new ones that build on local traditions and materials while appealing to the larger marketplace. We also work carefully to develop pricing structures that balance the need for a fair, productive wage with the marketplace competition.

Direct Access to Markets & Buyers

The products ATA brings into U.S. and European markets are market-ready and available to wholesalers or retailers who then establish lasting relationships with artisan producers.

One of the most valuable resources ATA brings to artisan groups is its ability to connect them directly to buyers and importers. ATA exhibits artisan products in New York, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, and Johannesburg. ATA recruits importers and large scale retailers for these well-designed and competitively priced home furnishings and accessories. Often ATA literally brings buyers directly to artisans by hosting periodic buyers' trips to the countries in which we work. ATA also offers information about and access to the vast and growing internet market.

The Grants Program

ATA also supports artisans through the ATA Grants Program and has made approximately 40 grants per year for over thirty years to artisan groups around the world. Government agencies and private foundations find it difficult and time-consuming to administer grants in small denominations. These small grants are often critical in giving a jump-start to entrepreneurial artisan groups.

Since 1976, ATA has helped create jobs and increase income for craftspeople worldwide; strengthened existing and created sustainable new craft businesses; and helped to preserve the cultural traditions that make each country unique, for example:

- Jobs: In FY05, we reached nearly 18,000 artisans in projects and more than 3,500 in grants for a total of more than 21,000 artisans.

- Sales: In FY05 our sales goal was $4.5 million; we actually leveraged $5.3 million (51% export and 49% local).

- Results are not measured just in sales figures but in health, environment and cultural preservation. In Mexico, through the innovative Lead-Free Alliance, This ground-breaking project trained potters in the use of new lead-free glazes, made improvements in kiln technology, improved the quality of the pottery, cut fuel use by 38% and re-opened export markets.

The purpose of the AllinPeace Movement is to revive this spirit among youth and communities especially in conflict areas, as demonstrated in the First Peace Olympia-Delphi Festival for Children in July 2001, in which twelve communities from around the world participated. Our objective is to create an opportunity to build bridges beyond flags and countries, through the universal language of harmonious, athletic movement and the arts. We strive to sow seeds of mutual respect that build solidarity between participating communities. AllinPeace provides the soil for such development. IWA and the Spacial Dynamics Institute have worked together to develop a program that encourages cooperation among youth who have traditionally faced each other as "enemies". Communication activities, collaborative athletic events, and contact with the "other" help sensitize them to the magnitude of problems faced by children their own age. The weeklong festival, held in Delphi, Greece, aims to break down the kinds of stereotypes that breed hostility and to build a sense of community through athletic, artistic, and non-violent communication experiences. The week-long program culminates in a two-day festival modeled on the ancient Olympic tradition. We are inviting the children to discover paths that lead to new ways of relating to one another. This affords them the opportunity, (if they wish), to attempt a more active role in their communities and individual development. Hopefully, such responsible action will lead to more dynamic and empathetic societies.

About the alonovo.com Concept intelligent marketplace Think of the power of a large database that collects information about how corporations behave and then integrates that data directly into the shopping experience. When you are about to purchase a TV, shoes, socks or an IPOD you can not only consider the price and the quality of the product, but can easily see what kind of behavior we are "buying into". Our alonovo.com mission is to connect the concept of corporate behavior directly to the profit motive. When a corporation is evolving to balance people, planet and profit -everyone wins. We are working to inform society in a very simple, visually appealing manner with regard to corporate behavior at their point of online purchase. And the reason is every time we make a purchase we are transferring power to a business. Is this power going to support ... * Fair Labor or Sweatshops? * Emission Reduction or Pollution? * Recycling or Toxic Waste? * Resource Conservation or Plunder the Earth? * Political Neutrality or Undermine Democracy? * Partner with Local Community or Destroy the Local Community Economy? So by offering products from one of the leaders in the online shopping world (Amazon.com), trusted data from independent well-respected sources like KLD Research & Analytics, Inc., Social Accountability International and others, we provide a free experience that will gradually connect how a company behaves with their profit. And this is the importance of a large and growing alonovo.com community. If we are just a small group of people, we won't have much of an impact. However if you tell everyone you know about this service (and they tell everyone they know, and so on) we can be a large force that can make a tremendous impact in terms of how corporations conduct themselves. When you purchase using alonovo.com, you are doing your part to send a clear message to businesses—we want blue skies, clean water, a fair and growing economy, intelligent use of our natural resources, safe and humane workplaces and sensible partnerships with local communities. Beyond helping to shape social, environmental and political practices of businesses, you are also directly helping non-profit organizations that need funding for their critical work. We, the alonovo.com community contribute between 20% and 40% of our revenue (based upon your purchases through alonovo.com) to your cause of choice. This is a community we can all be proud to belong to, regardless of political perspectives and ideology. The American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) is a national 501c3 non-profit, non-partisan organization working to reverse the trend of chains displacing locally-owned independent businesses, preserve a place for entrepreneurship, and to restore decision-making authority over community future to the people who call it "home." Our locally-owned independent businesses We help communities launch and perpetuate local Independent Business Alliances -- coalitions of locally-owned independent businesses, citizens and community organizations. IBAs operate in communities of all sizes and political ideologies and function in three distinct but overlapping realms: 1) Ongoing public education about the vital economic, social and cultural roles independent businesses play in the community. The elevated community dialogue becomes palpable. 2) Group promotion and advertising to elevate the collective profile of those businesses in the community. Programs help citizens to identify local businesses and gain those businesses some of the advantages of economies of scale and presence enjoyed by chains. 3) Informing local government decisions to help broaden economic development from a sole basis of "how can we attract outside businesses to the community?" to "how can we enhance what we already have and create more opportunities for entrepreneurs from within?" IBAs have gained impressive representation on local economic development bodies and build solid relationships with City officials. IBAs have been instrumental in shifting local culture back to supporting locally-owned independent businesses. They have led the way in defending their communities against practices that unfairly favor national and transnational chains such as exposing and overturning public subsidies, collaborated with local government to find and minimize leakage of dollars from the community to increase community prosperity and use taxpayer dollars to benefit those who pay them, and instigated shifts in local policy to bolster resident-owned business. IBAs have helped unite disparate community groups – racial, social, economic, geographic – by providing common ground for community building and mutual esteem. They have given voice to locally-owned independent business, a frequently overlooked community component that long has been its bedrock.

Founded in 1994, the Angiogenesis Foundation is the world’s first 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to conquering disease using a new approach based on angiogenesis, the growth of new capillary blood vessels in the body. We have identified angiogenesis as the “common denominator” in society’s most feared diseases. Our focus on this underlying process of many different diseases makes our approach as a medical organization unique. The Foundation is the recognized, expert voice and champion of this new field of medicine.

Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Angiogenesis Foundation’s goal is to help people lead healthier, longer lives by restoring balance to blood vessel growth. Through research, education, and advocacy — with patients, physicians, researchers, industry, payers, and government — we enable patients to gain access to safe and effective treatments coming from the angiogenesis field for cancer, blinding diseases, wounds, and many other serious diseases.

Working with an international advisory board and a faculty of medical research experts, we are speeding the progress of modern medicine, teaching doctors how to adopt 21st century treatments as they emerge, and laying the groundwork for major, future breakthroughs. Because angiogenesis plays a role in so many different diseases, the Foundation ‘cross-fertilizes’ knowledge from one disease research area to another, so that medical progress for many diseases can be catalyzed at once.

As a scientific organization, the Angiogenesis Foundation is independent of any individual, institution, or commercial entity. We are committed to helping people around the world benefit from the full promise of angiogenesis-based medicine, and to make life-, limb-, and vision-saving treatments available to everyone in need.

ASHWINI (Association for Health Welfare in the Nilgiris) is a Charitable Organisation providing comprehensive health care for one of the most neglected sections of our society - the Adivasis. Gudalur Valley situated in the tri-junction of the three South Indian States of Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka is the home of over 25000 Adivasis for many centuries. Five different tribes viz. Paniyas, Bettakurumbas, Mullukurumbas, Kattunaickens and Irulas were inhabiting this forested valley. Alienated from their own land by big Tea Estates, migrants from the plains and by Government authorities, these adivasis fought back by organising themselves into a strong political force. They were able to assert their political and social rights, to revive their cultural art forms and to join the mainstream society as equal partners with dignity. The political struggle is briefly outlined in the page AMS. Equally remarkable is their quest for good quality health care. Started as a small community health programme primarily targeted at training tribal women on women and child care issues, the programme grew into ASHWINI, comprising of a 20 bedded hospital, 8 Sub-Centres and as an important institution owned and managed by the people themselves. The eventful history of our efforts so far is traced in the History, giving brief details of the activities during the last 10 years. One of the highlights of ASHWINI's health programme is the innovative health insurance scheme. For the adivasis used to community living for ages, the health insurance scheme was the modern equivalent of sharing their risks and helping each other in the hour of crisis. Over ten years, this programme is being run by ASHWINI successfully, though not without problems. We are sharing our experience in running this insurance scheme, details of the composite package in the page Insurance Scheme. Besides, some more relevant statistics regarding the hospital and field activities, and audited financial reports are given in the Statistics section. Our work can be understood in a proper perspective only with the knowledge of the social and cultural background of the Adivasi society in Gudalur. We have taken care to preserve the rich Adivasi Culture, even while introducing them to the benefits of modern medicine. So, a few selected photographs are given in the Photo Gallery in various headings - with special attention to their cultural life and setting of the adivasis.

The AFTF has a membership roster of 70 social enterprises and confederations from 9 countries which are among the poorest in Asia: Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, all of which belong to the craft and food sectors. Our members represent thousands of grassroots workers and artisans, cooperatives, family units, workshops for the handicapped, women's groups and small private companies whose common denominator is that they are small and oftentimes marginalized. They mostly operate in the informal economy where wages and incomes are low, social benefits almost non-existent, working conditions difficult. The AFTF is the regional chapter of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT). Goals The AFTF aims to contribute to the sustainable development of disadvantaged producers in Asia by: · Providing them access to the regional and inter-regional export markets; · Creating a platform for more effective networking among member-organizations in the areas of skills development, technology transfer, and access to information; · Promoting fair trade principles and practices in the region. The Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura (APAC) is a legally constituted Bolivian non-profit organization, having as a general purpose the promotion of culture in a wide activity range. Its primary efforts are particularly focused on producing and staging international festivals headquartered in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra and sourrounding towns of cultural importance every other year. Although APAC organizes and accomplishes different cultural activities (e.g., courses, seminars, lectures, picture exhibitions, plays, concerts), its main activities are the International American Renaissance and Baroque Music Festival "Misiones de Chiquitos" (held in even years, e.g., 2008), and the International Theatre Festival "Santa Cruz de la Sierra(held in odd years, e.g., 2009). Both events constitute a national heritage and were devised to make the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra better known as a Latin American culture centre. APAC also maintains a publishing fund, devoted to sponsoring academic research of a cultural nature and publishing the results. Apart from books, APAC also creates compact disc recordings, videos and other audiovisual matters. These are produced by Bolivian and foreign authors who have committed themselves to rescuing, promoting, disseminating, and preserving the outstanding cultural-artistic heritage that is indigenous to Bolivia's eastern lowlands, principally the Oriente, and within this area, the Chiquitania. APAC has set as a fundamental goal the benevolent appropriation of the diverse eastern Bolivian cultural heritages to stimulate its people to retrieve their dignity and self-esteem, and thus be better able to face the challenges an increasingly globalized and culturally homogeneous world brings. APAC considers the area's traditional cultures as an invaluable investment, which make possible the ability to positively reshape a community's destiny.

The Associação Saúde Criança Renascer (ASCR) was founded in 1991 by Dr. Vera Cordeiro - General Practice, specialized in Psychosomatic Medicine. It is an NGO - Non-Governmental Organization - a non-profit entity with no political or religious affiliation. The constant admission/re-admission cycle of the children treated at the Hospital da Lagoa, in Rio de Janeiro - who were released without having the necessary structure to continue their treatment at home - caused the indignation of professionals of the Health sector of that institution. The fact that many patients were re-admitted in an even more serious state, in some cases leading to the death of the child, has brought together doctors, nurses, and members of the civil society who decided to create this association. The key objective of Renascer is the restructuring of the families of those children, acting in the Plano de Ação Familiar - Family Action Plan (PAF) that comprehends five major areas: health, professional qualification, housing, education, and citizenship. Nowadays, the ASCR works with the vital support of around 140 volunteers and over 38 employees who care for 250 families and 850 children and adolescents. There are three care units: Recreation Room at the Hospital da Lagoa; Main Office, at the Parque Lage, and Casa das Oficinas (Workshop House) / Administration, at the Jardim Botânico. "Our dream is to see this action being reproduced throughout all government hospitals in Brazil. And, ideally, in all the areas of the world where this kind of problem occurs." Our work is aimed at four of the most important issues facing the world – ageing, disadvantaged children and youth, population health, and reconciliation and human rights. We work on one or more of those issues in the seven countries in which we maintain a presence: Australia, Bermuda, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United States and Viet Nam.

Over the course of more than two decades, The Atlantic Philanthropies have awarded approximately 4,240 grants totalling $3.8 billion through the third quarter of 2006.

We plan to spend our entire endowment by 2020 to make a significant, sustainable impact in our four programme areas – Ageing, Disadvantaged Children & Youth, Population Health and Reconciliation & Human Rights. We intend to award approximately $350 million per year through 2016, the year we plan to complete active grantmaking.,/p> As of 31 December 2005, the value of Atlantic’s endowment was $3.9 billion. Of that, $580 million was committed for grants at year end. The endowment consists of a diversified portfolio of absolute return strategies, private equity investments, global equities and bonds. We also own interests in hotels, resorts, health clubs and retailers through General Atlantic Group Limited (GAGL), a subsidiary. These businesses accounted for approximately 12.1 per cent of the endowment value at year end 2005.

To achieve our mission, we partner with grantees, other funders and governments. We believe in the power of advocacy by those who will benefit by it, especially the disadvantaged. To that end, we support targeted initiatives, ranging from the Treatment Action Campaign, which influenced the government of South Africa to provide effective medications to people with HIV/AIDS, to the legal team which persuaded the Supreme Court to abolish the juvenile death penalty in the United States, to the effort to increase the number of religiously integrated schools in Northern Ireland.

In addition to these tangible campaigns, Atlantic seeks always to strengthen the capacity of leaders and institutions in the fields we have chosen, since this is the best insurance of a vibrant movement for social equality and justice that will endure long after we have made our last grant.

We understand that we cannot achieve the kind of change we seek on our own. Our grantees do the hard work, and our funding partners make it possible for us to join together in making big, bold, often risky bets.

We do our best to learn what works and what doesn’t and to share this knowledge with colleagues and partners. As we have learned from the able advocates we support, we hold our values constant while remaining nimble in pursuing strategies that will best advance them.

BancoSol's roots date back to 1986, when ACCION and Bolivian business leaders established a nonprofit microlending entity called PRODEM. By 1988, PRODEM had grown so large that it was outstripping the capacity of the local banking system to supply it with lending capital. In 1992, PRODEM joined with ACCION International, Calmeadow Foundation, Bolivian banks and other investors to establish BancoSol, the first private commercial bank in the world dedicated exclusively to microenterprise.

The Barefoot College began in 1972 with the conviction that solutions to rural problems lie within the community. The College addresses problems of drinking water, girl education, health & sanitation, rural unemployment, income generation, electricity and power, as well as social awareness and the conservation of ecological systems in rural communities. The College benefits the poorest of the poor who have no alternatives. The College encourages practical knowledge and skills rather than paper qualifications through a learning by doing process of education. The College was entirely built by Barefoot Architects. The campus spreads over 80,000 square feet area and consists of residences, a guest house, a library, dining room, meeting halls, an open air theatre, an administrative block, a ten-bed referral base hospital, pathological laboratory, teacher's training unit, water testing laboratory, a Post Office, STD/ISD call booth, a Craft Shop and Development Centre, an Internet dhaba (cafe), a puppet workshop, an audio visual unit, a screen printing press, a dormitory for residential trainees and a 700,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank. The College is also completely solar-electrified. The College serves a population of over 125,000 people both in immediate as well as distant areas.

Barefoot Power was established by energy professionals who, faced with a lack of enthusiasm by the traditional energy sector, want to prove that investments in improved energy services for the world’s poor makes good economic, social and environmental sense. Barefoot Power embraces the concept of social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurs combine a social vision with the entrepreneurial skills of the private sector. Our vision to improve livelihoods by providing 1 million people with improved energy services by 2011 is based on a financially sustainable business plan. We have secured our first round of investment through share equity and aim to provide good returns to our investors via a low-overhead high-turnover model. To enable us to reach our vision our short term goals, by December 2007, are to: provide 7,500 households with improved lighting systems; through a participatory process, identify how to further develop power supplies in these communities over the next three years and any micro-enterprise that would benefit from improved energy supply; become a trusted company in rural communities; and attract additional investment to step-up our activities for 2008. To make this possible, we are in the process of forming partnerships with businesses and NGOs that have existing on-ground networks in rural areas. Barefoot Power will endeavor to build the technical capacity of these organizations, and by doing so encourage the development of new renewable energy service providers. We link our partners with appropriately engineered and well-priced energy solutions. We also aim to assist these organisations in attracting financial assistance to support their activities and the rural communities that they serve. The market for village power is huge. It is in this market that Barefoot Power is open to sharing project experiences, partnering for specific projects and establishing alliances with other individuals or organisations who are interested in co-operation rather than competition to improve livelihoods in rural communities worldwide.

The Bay Area Equity Fund I L.P., managed by JPMorgan, is a $75 million venture capital fund. The Fund seeks to invest in companies that can deliver market-rate venture capital returns while enabling social and environmental improvement in the San Francisco Bay Area's low and moderate income neighborhoods. Investments are made in private, primarily mid-to-late stage growth companies across all industries, with a focus on the strengths of the Bay Area including: technology, healthcare, clean tech and consumer products and services. The Fund can lead or co-invest with other Funds. The Fund's limited partner investors include major banks and insurance companies, foundations, corporations and private individuals.

The Fund assists its portfolio companies in developing a "double bottom line" to achieve strong long-term financial success as well as positive social and environmental improvement in their local communities. We believe that the social and environmental practices that young companies choose to adopt can be significantly beneficial to the fiscal bottom line both via direct benefits of cost savings and value creation, and via indirect benefits of creating goodwill with their market, customers and community, and enhancing employee morale and retention. The Fund helps portfolio companies implement double bottom line programs at a pace and scope that fits each company’s financial objectives and stage of growth. In this way, companies can create a balanced culture of financial success and connection to the community from their early stages.

As the Fund is managed by JPMorgan, it can leverage the considerable resources of JPMorgan to identify investment opportunities and to help its portfolio companies become more successful. We can introduce our companies to our world-class investment professionals, and can help them take advantage of the many financial and advisory services, as well as the networking and promotion opportunities that JPMorgan provides.

The Fund invests in companies that have operations in or near one of the many low and moderate income areas of the ten-county San Francisco Bay Area.

The Bay Area Family of Funds is a regional effort, developed by the Bay Area Council, to attract private capital into low and moderate-income neighborhoods through “double bottom line” (DBL) investing. The Family of Funds leverages its investments in these communities through projects that promote smart growth, address poverty, support local businesses and clean up contaminated sites with market-based solutions.

It has raised over $175 million for DBL investments through three separate funds: the Bay Area Smart Growth Fund, the Bay Area Equity Fund, and the California Environmental Redevelopment Fund. The Funds’ investors consist of banks, foundations, pension funds, insurance companies, individuals, and other corporations, and are expected to leverage $1 billion of investment in Bay Area low-and-moderate income communities over a ten year period.

These market-based investments will simultaneously address economic prosperity and environmental quality in underserved neighborhoods throughout the region. This smart growth program will engage the Bay Area’s disadvantaged communities to capitalize their underutilized workforce, land, and resources in ways that create wealth for existing low-to-moderate income community residents and contribute to continued regional health and well-being.

The Bay Area Family of Funds serves as an umbrella fund for three distinct but related funds, which share common service areas, goals and oversight. The three funds are: Bay Area Smart Growth Fund, Bay Area Equity Fund, and California Environmental Redevelopment Fund (CERF).

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance (the Alliance) helps donors make informed giving decisions and advances high standards of conduct among organizations that solicit contributions from the public. The Alliance was formed in 2001 through the merger of the National Charities Information Bureau with the Council of Better Business Bureaus’ Foundation (which housed the Philanthropic Advisory Service.) The merger partners offer over a century of combined experience in charity evaluation. The Alliance produces in-depth evaluative reports on national charities based on comprehensive Standards for Charity Accountability and publishes a quarterly magazine, the Wise Giving Guide. National charities that meet the standards can apply to participate in the Alliance’s National Charity Seal program.

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance produces reports on nationally soliciting charitable organizations. About one-third of the BBBs in the United States report on regionally soliciting charities.

The Alliance does not rank charities but rather seeks to assist donors in making informed judgments about charities soliciting their support.

The volume of public inquiries helps identify which national charities will be the subject of a BBB Wise Giving Alliance report. In addition, a nationally soliciting charity can request to be evaluated at its own initiative by completing the national charity enrollment form.

Throughout the history of Pegasus Logistics Group, which is a worldwide logistics and transportation company, it's employees have always followed the example set by their leader, Ken Beam, to be passionate about any task they set out to accomplish, including charity. In 2004, Ken's passion infected some of the employees' spouses' with the idea to take the fundraising efforts to a new level. Sharmaine Snyder, wife of Brent Snyder, COO of Pegasus, brainstormed an auction which was embraced by family, friends, and vendors of Pegasus. In an unbelievable four weeks, an auction took place which blew the Pegasus fundraising goal out of the water. That auction alone raised $17,000.00! Combined with what Pegasus employees raised, we were able to donate $35,000 to the American Lung Association. More importantly, this event gave realization to many about what a powerful impact a group of people can make when they work together. Ken and Darla's dream was born in 2005, as The Beam Foundation hosted its first annual golf tournament and Auction at The Tribute which raised an almost unheard of first year fundraising amount of $70,000! The Beam Foundation is a group effort of employees, spouses, families and friends of Pegasus Logistics Group. Beartooth acquires, restores, protects, and develops ecologically-important ranchland in a manner that generates competitive returns while conserving western landscapes, abundant wildlife populations and the West’s vibrant ranching heritage. We consider ourselves value investors in the traditional sense, scouring the market for opportunities to acquire ranchland at attractive valuations or to partner with like-minded ranchers. Fundamentally, we create value by converting agricultural land into recreational ranch property via entitlement, habitat restoration and protection, and ecologically-appropriate limited development. In addition, Beartooth assesses the full array of non-development values embedded in each property, including agricultural, natural resource, conservation and ecosystem service values. Wherever possible, Beartooth enhances and captures these values through conservation easement sales or tax-deductible donations and by developing conservation enterprises such as ecologically-sound agriculture and timber operations, mitigation banks, and more. Beartooth’s business model deliberately focuses on the integrated goal of conserving important land and generating competitive financial returns. We work in partnership with conservation organizations to find, restore, protect and plan limited development on our properties. This partnership provides Beartooth with deal flow, restoration assistance, easement partners and conservation science, while enabling conservation organizations to accomplish more than they otherwise could. We believe our conservation mission is a near and long term competitive advantage. Far from sacrificing financial returns to accomplish conservation goals, integrating conservation at the core of our business, allows us to reduce investment risk while generating competitive returns.

BCP's approach conserves honeybees and the environment, increasing farm yields due to pollination, and farmer income through bee products. BCP also promotes apitherapy, the proven practice of using bee stings and other bee products (honey, royal jelly, etc.) to treat health conditions, in regions where there are no other formal providers of healthcare. BCP addresses Millennium Development Goal #1: alleviate extreme poverty and hunger. According to the UNDP Human Development Report, two-thirds of the 130 million Nigerian population, mostly rural dwellers, is acutely poor; 70% do not have a sustainable livelihood. BCP?s current plan will directly impact about 5,000 of these people and their families over 5 years, or about .03% of the 70%. Another several thousand will be indirectly impacted. Improving farm yields nationwide will also have major systemic leverage.

Big Ideas, Huge Impact
Together with partners and supporters worldwide, we use technology innovation and business expertise to solve unmet social needs. Leveraging the intellectual capital and resources of Silicon Valley, we create solutions that are truly life-changing. Our global endeavors have been instrumental in improving literacy, human rights and landmine detection. With expanded support, we can accomplish much more.

Opening Doors Everywhere
Our programs are impacting the lives of thousands of individuals and families, every single day.

* Bookshare.org. For people with vision and reading/print disabilities, we have formed the world's largest accessible digital library of scanned books, journals and magazines.
* Route 66 Literacy. To improve literacy, we founded a web-based program that enables anyone who is literate to help teenagers and adults learn to read and write.
* Human Rights. We provide science and information technology to human rights advocates, strengthening their pursuit of justice and reconciliation.
* Landmine Detection. We are adapting advanced military de-mining tools to safely rid the world of this deadly hazard.
* e-Adaptive Management Software (e-AM). A joint venture between the Conservation Measures Partnership (CMP) and Benetech, the e-AM is designed to bring quality project management tools to the global conservation community.

Return on Humanity
Our business model is similar to that of a technology startup. We have a senior management team with depth of expertise in technology, intellectual property law, licensing venture fund management and public service. Needs and opportunities where technology could have a tremendous impact are identified and explored. Then we follow our careful, proven process for determining the viability of new ideas. We are pragmatic idealists, willing to take measured risks for big social payoffs.

We join forces with strategic partners and philanthropic investors who share our zeal to better the world. Together, we build practical solutions that meet critical needs in the non-profit sector. Our return on investment is not measured in dollars, but in the number of lives we affect. This return on humanity will pay off for generations to come.

Benetechs Human Rights program takes tens of thousands of stories most of them anecdotal evidence of individual and community suffering and systematically turns them into analysis that strengthens the arguments made by human rights defenders.

Such formal collection and collation of data and large-scale analysis can prove that many cases of mass violence are not isolated incidents, but rather planned and systematically executed policy. Such findings can build strong, defensible claims about what has been endured by victims and societies. The result: perpetrators can be brought to justice, which then helps prevent the recurrence of atrocities.

No other organization dedicates itself to applying technology and scientific methods exclusively to human rights. The rigorous data processing and analysis we apply withstands adversarial critiques, helping to transform the debate about human rights from politics to science.

Topics cover sports, finance, politics, the war on terror, Iraq, and various current events in between.

Because participants cannot profit financially or materially from their successful bets – all the money won or lost eventually goes to non-profit organizations – *bet2give* is obviously not a "gambling" venue. According to the founders, the *bet2give* value proposition is something else altogether:

"Since you're betting directly against other people, you are effectively competing to divert *their* funds to *your* favorite causes -- and they're trying, of course, to do the same thing unto you," explains Maurice Balick, who co-founded of NewsFutures with childhood friend Emile Servan-Schreiber: "On *bet2give*, those who are best at predicting the future also get to decide how to improve the future, one donation at a time."

"By combining the thrill of betting and the reward of giving, *bet2give*delivers a unique and powerful emotional experience", continues Servan-Schreiber. "Rather than competing with existing channels of online giving, we are betting that *bet2give* will contribute to enlarge the online fundraising plate for all sorts of worthy causes that people believe in, all the while providing great entertainment and valuable collective predictions backed up by real money."

But, wen can also do it on our own if we strive hard and push ourselves to do every task we have. But by the things that we have that surrounds us everyday, I can say that we cannot do it; if we have such a limited time and there are piles of work that we have to be done there is a small chance for that.

Bioversity International is the world's leading organization dedicated to researching agricultural biodiversity to improve people's lives.

Our research, carried out with partners around the world, seeks sustainable solutions to meet three important challenges:

* Malnutrition and hidden hunger of missing micronutrients

* Sustainability and resilience in food supplies and farming systems

* Conservation and use, ensuring that agricultural biodiversity remains accessible to all.

We also provide policy information and analysis to improve the legal framework -- global, regional and national -- needed to ensure that agricultural biodiversity can be put to work to deliver sustainable solutions for economic development.

Funding for Bioversity comes from statutory donors and foundations, who support us directly and through their contributions to the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Bioversity is also supported by a registered charity in the United Kingdom, and in the United States by a Foundation that has 501(c)(3) status.

Bioversity's headquarters are in Maccarese, Italy, just outside Rome, where we work closely with UN Agencies such as FAO, IFAD and WFP. However, the vast majority of our staff work from 20 offices that cover the regions of the world. In addition, we are pleased to host some system-wide activities on behalf of the CGIAR.

The goal of North Carolina’s Strategic Plan for Biofuels Leadership is that by 2017, 10% of liquid fuels sold in North Carolina will come from biofuels locally grown and produced. In 2007, the North Carolina General Assembly had the foresight and vision to create the Biofuels Center to implement this plan so that the state's farmers, biofuels manufacturers, biofuels workers and consumers will benefit from this new multimillion dollar home-grown industry.

BioReaction Industries (BRI) was established in November, 1993, in Tualatin, Oregon. The company was founded to research, develop, manufacture and market products that biologically digest volatile organic compounds (VOC's) created by a variety of generators utilizing patented biotechnologies.

During the first years, BRI focused on educating local, state, and federal regulators about its innovative technology. Additionally, several biofiltration systems were installed at beta test sites to debug the product and ensure there were no long term product reliability issues.

BioReaction's extensive research and product testing in actual industrial settings has provided the data necessary to support correlations in varying system/process parameters and to streamline sizing and removal efficiency requirements.

The past three years, BRI products have been placed in a variety of new markets, spanning the industrial VOC arena, and expanding to add odor control product solutions. These installations have validated the ability of bio-oxidation to provide a reliable, sustainable pollution control alternative.

BizWorld's mission is to challenge and engage children across the cultural and economic spectrum through experiential learning programs that teach the basics of business, entrepreneurship, and money management and promote teamwork and leadership in the classroom. Our Story In 1993, our founder, venture capitalist Tim Draper, was asked by his eight-year-old daughter to describe what he did at work every day. Excited by the opportunity to explain entrepreneurship and business to a third grader, he used his daughter’s enthusiasm for making friendship bracelets to create a simulation activity in which students learn to start and run their own business. From initial funding to marketing campaigns and financial statements, the program allowed students to not only understand how business works, but enabled them to experience it first-hand. The need and demand for BizWorld’s hands-on, cross-curricular, project-based approach to learning quickly became apparent. In 1997, the BizWorld Foundation was established to make BizWorld programs available to all educators and effectively involve the community in the education of youth. Our Reach The BizWorld programs have reached students in all 50 states and 84 countries. BizWorld established its first international franchise in the Netherlands in 2001. Since then the BizWorld Foundation has grown to include affiliates in Singapore, India and South Korea.

Multinational coffee companies rule shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate the $80-billion-plus coffee industry. But while Americans continue to pay for luxury lattes and cappuccinos, the prices paid to coffee farmers remain so low that many have been forced to abandon their fields. The documentary BLACK GOLD tells the complex story behind an attempt to make globalization work for the producers of the second most traded commodity in the world, after oil.

Nowhere is the disparity of the coffee industry more evident than in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Tadesse Meskela manages the Oromia Coffee Farmers Co-operative Union, representing over 74,000 coffee farmers. The union buys coffee from 101 individual co-operatives spread across southern Ethiopia. BLACK GOLD follows Meskela on his mission to save struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As his union’s farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Meskela travels the world to find buyers willing to pay a fair price—a better price than the one set by the international commodities exchange.

The consumers can bring a change if awareness is given to consumers to ask for more fair trade products. —Tadesse Meskela

Against the backdrop of Meskela's journey to London and Seattle, the film reveals the enormous power of the multinational players that dominate the world's coffee trade. Since the International Coffee Agreement—which regulated the supply of coffee on the world market—collapsed in 1989, the price paid to coffee farmers has fallen to a 30-year low. But in the same time period, retail sales from coffee have increased from $30 billion to $80 billion a year. Today, four multinational corporations dominate the global coffee market: Kraft, Nestle, Proctor & Gamble and Sara Lee.

BLACK GOLD exposes how New York City commodity traders, the international coffee exchanges and the double dealings of trade ministers at the World Trade Organization all challenge Meskela in his quest for a long-term solution to pay coffee farmers a living wage

The thesis of the book that says our risk model is wrong: Before the discovery of Australia, Europeans thought that all swans were white, and it would have been considered completely unreasonable to imagine swans of any other color. The first sighting of a black swan in Australia, where black swans are, in fact, rather common, shattered that notion. The moral of this story is that there are exceptions out there, hidden away from our eyes and imagination, waiting to be discovered by complete accident. What I call a "Black Swan" is an exceptional unpredictable event that, unlike the bird, carries a huge impact.

It's impossible for the editors of Forbes.com to predict who will change the world, because major changes are Black Swans, the result of accidents and luck. But we do know who society's winners will be: those who are prepared to face Black Swans, to be exposed to them, to recognize them when they show up and to rigorously exploit them.

Things, it turns out, are all too often discovered by accident--but we don't see that when we look at history in our rear-view mirrors. The technologies that run the world today (like the Internet, the computer and the laser) are not used in the way intended by those who invented them. Even academics are starting to realize that a considerable component of medical discovery comes from the fringes, where people find what they are not exactly looking for. It is not just that hypertension drugs led to Viagra or that angiogenesis drugs led to the treatment of macular degeneration, but that even discoveries we claim come from research are themselves highly accidental. They are the result of undirected tinkering narrated after the fact, when it is dressed up as controlled research. The high rate of failure in scientific research should be sufficient to convince us of the lack of effectiveness in its design.

If the success rate of directed research is very low, though, it is true that the more we search, the more likely we are to find things "by accident," outside the original plan. Only a disproportionately minute number of discoveries traditionally came from directed academic research. What academia seems more masterful at is public relations and fundraising.

This is good news--for some. Ignore what you were told by your college economics professor and consider the following puzzle. Whenever you hear a snotty European presenting his stereotypes about Americans, he will often describe them as "unintellectual," "uneducated," and "poor in math," because, unlike European schooling, American education is not based on equation drills and memorization.

Yet the person making these statements will likely be addicted to his iPod, wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans, and using Microsoft Word to jot down his "cultural" statements on his Intel-based PC, with some Google searches on the Internet here and there interrupting his composition. If old enough, he might also be using Viagra.

America's primary export, it appears, is trial-and-error, and the innovative knowledge attained in such a way. Trial-and-error has error in it; and most top-down traditional rational and academic environments do not like the fallibility of "error" and the embarrassment of not quite knowing where they're going. The U.S. fosters entrepreneurs and creators, not exam-takers, bureaucrats or, worse, deluded economists. So the perceived weakness of the American pupil in conventional studies is where his or her very strength may lie. The American system of trial and error produces doers: Black Swan-hunting, dream-chasing entrepreneurs, with a tolerance for a certain class of risk-taking and for making plenty of small errors on the road to success or knowledge. This environment also attracts aggressive tinkering foreigners like this author.

Globalization allowed the U.S. to specialize in the creative aspect of things, the risk-taking production of concepts and ideas--that is, the scalable part of production, in which more income can be generated from the same fixed assets through innovation. By exporting jobs, the U.S. has outsourced the less scalable and more linear components of production, assigning them to the citizens of more mathematical and culturally rigid states, who are happy to be paid by the hour to work on other people's ideas.

Let us go one step further. It is high time to recognize that we humans are far better at doing than understanding, and better at tinkering than inventing. But we don't know it. We truly live under the illusion of order believing that planning and forecasting are possible. We are scared of the random, yet we live from its fruits. We are so scared of the random that we create disciplines that try to make sense of the past--but we ultimately fail to understand it, just as we fail to see the future.

The current discourse in economics, for example, is antiquated. American undirected free-enterprise works because it aggressively allows us to capture the randomness of the environment--the cheap Black Swans. This works not just because of competition, and even less because of material incentives. Neither the followers of Adam Smith nor those of Karl Marx seem to be conscious of the prevalence and effect of wild randomness. They are too bathed in enlightenment-style cause-and-effect and cannot accept that skills and payoffs may have nothing to do with one another. Nor can they swallow the argument that it is not necessarily the better technology that wins, but rather, the luckiest one. And, sadly, even those who accept this fundamental uncertainty often fail to see that it is a good thing.

Random tinkering is the path to success. And fortunately, we are increasingly learning to practice it without knowing it--thanks to overconfident entrepreneurs, naive investors, greedy investment bankers, confused scientists and aggressive venture capitalists brought together by the free-market system.

We need more tinkering: Uninhibited, aggressive, proud tinkering. We need to make our own luck. We can be scared and worried about the future, or we can look at it as a collection of happy surprises that lie outside the path of our imagination.

Value is what gets created when investors invest and organizations act to pursue their mission. Traditionally, we have thought of value as being either economic (and created by for-profit companies) or social (and created by nonprofit or non-governmental organizations). What the Blended Value Proposition states is that all organizations, whether for-profit or not, create value that consists of economic, social and environmental value components—and that investors (whether market-rate, charitable or some mix of the two) simultaneously generate all three forms of value through providing capital to organizations. The outcome of all this activity is value creation and that value is itself non-divisible and, therefore, a blend of these three elements.

BRAC works with people whose lives are dominated by extreme poverty, illiteracy, disease and other handicaps. With multifaceted development interventions, BRAC strives to bring about positive changes in the quality of life of the poor people of Bangladesh.

BRAC firmly believes and is actively involved in promoting human rights, dignity and gender equity through poor people’s social, economic, political and human capacity building. Although the emphasis of BRAC’s work is at the individual level, sustaining the work of the organisation depends on an environment that permits the poor to break out of the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. To this end, BRAC endeavours to bring about change at the level of national and global policy on poverty reduction and social progress. BRAC is committed to making its programmes socially, financially and environmentally sustainable, using new methods and improved technologies. As a part of its support to the programme participants and its financial sustainability, BRAC is also involved in various income generating enterprises.

Poverty reduction programmes undertaken so far have bypassed many of the poorest. In this context one of BRAC’s main focuses is the ultra poor. Given that development is a complex process requiring a strong dedication to learning, sharing of knowledge and being responsive to the needs of the poor, BRAC places a strong emphasis on their organisational development, simultaneously engaging itself in the process of capacity building on a national scale to accelerate societal emancipation.

The fulfilment of BRAC’s mission requires the contribution of competent professionals committed to the goals and values of BRAC. BRAC, therefore, fosters the development of the human potential of the members of the organisation and those they serve.

In order to achieve its goal, wherever necessary, BRAC welcomes partnerships with the community, like-minded organisations, governmental institutions, the private sector and development partners both at home and abroad.

New organizations in Kenya, Southern Sudan, and Malawi will reach 25,000 beneficiaries via 25 branch offices by June 2007. Today's business landscape requires that companies navigate a complex and evolving set of economic, environmental and social challenges and address stakeholder demands for greater transparency, accountability and responsibility. These factors affect all aspects of business operations -- from supply chain to marketplace and from employee productivity to investor return. To compete successfully, a company needs to develop responsible business policies and practices and make them an integral part of its mission, values, strategy and operations. Since 1992, Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) has helped companies of all sizes and sectors to achieve success in ways that demonstrate respect for ethical values, people, communities and the environment. A leading global resource for the business community and thought leaders around the world, BSR equips its member companies with the expertise to design and implement successful, socially responsible business policies, practices and processes. Membership in BSR provides an extensive set of practical resources -- including issue expertise, advisory services, training and timely insight on news, trends and innovations -- accessible through consultation, custom reports, publications and the web at www.bsr.org. BSR connects members to a global network of business and industry peers, partners, stakeholder groups and thought leaders. On behalf of its members, BSR also convenes and facilitates cross-sector dialogue and collaboration. BSR also acts as a trusted intermediary between business and civil society. While understanding business and serving its needs, BSR maintains strong relationships with other key stakeholders and opinion formers in the civic and public sectors. Through these relationships, BSR provides companies with alternative viewpoints and engagement opportunities that help them better formulate decisions, positions and actions. Global Alliances BSR is part of a growing global network of national organizations that promote awareness of CSR and provide business leaders with opportunities to collaborate and network with innovative managers across all industries, geographies and functions. BSR also works collaboratively with numerous other CSR, corporate citizenship and sustainability organizations throughout the world, such as Business in the Community in the U.K., the Council for Better Corporate Citizenship in Japan, CSR-Europe, Accion Empresarial in Chile, Instituto Ethos in Brazil, and MAALA in Israel. The Business Innovation Factory was launched in 2004 as the implementation arm for an economic development strategy developed by BIF founder and Chief Catalyst Saul Kaplan. The strategy, coined Innovation @ Scale, was straightforward: Leverage Rhode Island's size and densely connected networks to create a real world laboratory for testing new ideas. In particular, Kaplan saw a unique opportunity for Rhode Island to serve as a laboratory for projects that encourage public/private sector partnership — or as we call it, Collaborative Innovation. As an independent, non-profit organization, BIF has created a sustainable platform for bringing public and private sector partners together to focus on big win projects — projects that transform how value is delivered across all sectors of our economy. The BIF model is based on four simple tenets: THINK, LEARN, DO, and CONNECT.

The Call and Response film is a catalyst to engage the public in fighting human trafficking. In it, we graphically portray the state of modern-day slavery, and call our audience to respond to it. Our goal is to inspire the public to support high impact efforts by effective organizations.

By mobilizing and then connecting human and financial resources to partners already working on the front lines of the issue, and then by measuring and reporting the tangible results of that funding, the film will enable the public to respond to the issue in an appropriate and high-impact way. It is this outcomes-based change that we believe will result in the reduction of slavery.

Thus, the Fair Trade Fund has created “Response Projects” with well-established partners organizations such as Not For Sale, International Justice Mission and Free the Slaves.

These organizations authenticate the projects of their partners working in the field, and ensure the legitimacy of each partner.

Submissions are accepted from any interested 501(c)3 organization, and Response Projects are chosen based on a cost-benefit analysis of their potential for impact on the reduction and prevention of slavery and care for its victims.

Each project has a requested monetary amount needed to achieve the goals set therein which is then promoted to the public for communal funding. We work hard to make sure that each dollar is necessary for the set goals and that each dollar is used well for that purpose. Once the funding goal of a project is achieved, the partner organization is responsible for due diligence to achieve the expressed goals of the projects using the financial donation. Furthermore, the organization is responsible for submitting impact reports to the community of funders (the “Responder Team”) for that project on a timely and regular basis.

Projects are categorized based on the area of human trafficking that they address. They may be placed in the queue for child slavery, sexual slavery, child soldiering, or forced labor. While a program may create impact across these categories, the Fair Trade Fund attempts to most appropriately place each project so that responders may choose an area of interest about which they most care.

Furthermore, we are a part of the Responder Teams! Since we operate as a 501(c)3 organization, 100% of the profits generated by the film are also directed toward these projects.

Today's world is in a state of constant, profound and accelerated transformation. Most issues - in trade, finance, investment, energy, natural resources, population, employment, health, agriculture and food, the environment, science and technology, human rights, humanitarian action and refugees, culture, religions and nationalities, or security - have become global and interdependent, more numerous and more complex. Solving the problems that lie at the source of many crises and conflicts has become an overwhelming task for society.

Simultaneously, the players have multiplied and their weight has shifted. While the role and influence of civil society, including the private sector, has expanded astoundingly, governments and international organisations have lost ground, because their structures and operating procedures are often unsuited to anticipating and simultaneously resolving diverse and complex problems, let alone managing them from a global and long?term perspective. In this context, it is not surprising to witness, over the past decade, a growing interest in pluralism, in finding new approaches to governance - particularly in negotiation and other modes of conflict management - and in new forms of diplomacy.

The diverse and often experimental activities of the Centre for Applied Studies in International Negotiations (CASIN), created in 1979 in Geneva, Switzerland, mirror the essence of the preceding thoughts. They concentrate on a spectrum of issues related to national and international governance. They address the constellation of problems confronting modern societies and the international system, and seek avenues to enable stakeholders to apply instruments of governance such as negotiation, good offices, mediation, conciliation or dialogue, and allow them to find mutually acceptable solutions.

CASIN is an independent, non-profit foundation, subject to supervision by the Swiss Federal Department of the Interior and a governing Board of Trustees. CASIN is financed by revenues derived from its activities.
