Founding B-Corps capped at 82

We are Good Capital are proud to a founding B Corporation. Jay Coen Gilbert just sent out this note: there are 82 of us and we represent a $650 million marketplace.

Though more B Corps are joining, none of the new ones will be labeled founders.

We are Good Capital are proud to a founding B Corporation. Jay Coen Gilbert just sent out this note: there are 82 of us and we represent a $650 million marketplace.

Though more B Corps are joining, none of the new ones will be labeled founders.

“Every time a company becomes a B Corporation, we ring a bell here at our office, “Jay said in his email. “We have rung the bell 82 times so far. This little Ringing of the Bell ritual has become a fun and important part of our culture here at B Lab. So much so that we thought we’d begin to share it with all of you. Every couple of weeks we’ll be sending out a Ring the Bell email to all B Corporations to welcome the newbies into our community. We’ll list each new B Corporation, give you a brief feel for their business and hopefully share a little something personal that you wouldn’t get from their website. We’ll also acknowledge those individuals and organizations who helped bring the new B Corporations into our community.

“Many companies will be following your lead in 2008, but none will be Founding B Corporations. That honor is yours alone and we continue to be thankful for your leadership and support.”

So without further ado, please welcome the 82 Founding B Corporations, representing a $650 million marketplace. You are each leaders in dozens of industries and in creating a wide range of social and environmental benefits through your businesses. We try to make connections as best we can, but our hope is that you will reach out to and support each other.

Here is the list of 82 (just a paste from a word file with a short note from the company leaders on why they joined. We have not put them all into xigi yet, but we will).

The Founding B Corporations

In addition to the individuals thanked below, we’d like to honor the following organizations upon whose shoulders we stand and at whose important gatherings we met dozens of Founding B Corporations: BALLE and its local chapters, Coop America, Corporation 2020, Investors’ Circle, Social Venture Network, and SRI in the Rockies. If we’ve missed anything, please correct us and blame our minds not our hearts.

Adaptations, our design division, is recognized as the region’s premier design/build contractor working towards sustainable business and construction practices.

Offering the consumer a ‘brand’ of companies that embrace triple-bottom-line management is essential in turning this mainstream, behemoth economy towards a gentler, sustainable path. Although I typically abhor labels, the B Corporation is one I can embrace and wear proudly.

Impact Makers, Michael Pirron, Founder
Richmond, VA

Impact Makers delivers Information Technology and Management Consulting professional services, focused on the Healthcare industry. We are a non-stock, “competitive” social venture – the critical difference between Impact Makers and our competitors is that all of our profits go directly to our charitable community partners. Impact Makers transforms economic value into social value for our community. Specifically, Impact Makers is truly innovative in that it provides professional services at market prices, competes with other firms to win business, pays market salaries to its employees, is a nonprofit structure with books open to the public, and contributes strategic consulting, and all profits, to charitable community organizations

Impact Makers and B Lab have a shared mission to generally promote social purpose organizations. Both organizations are creating innovative ways to insert and enforce the social mission of corporations into the founding principles of organizations. Impact Makers has a unique new “hybrid” social venture model that goes beyond the already rigorous requirements of all B corporations; specifically, Impact Makers does not have any equity ownership (no shareholders) and exists to solely maximize community stakeholder value.

World Leadership School, Ross Wehner, Executive Director
Denver, CO

The World Leadership School partners with schools to develop service learning and leadership programs in Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize and the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe. On a World Leadership School trip, students study a single global issue like climate change or poverty. They advance from understanding to action by doing volunteer work alongside inspiring community leaders. By the end of a trip, we want students to understand the issue, feel like they can do something about it, and be on the path towards articulating their own leadership style and vision. Over the long term students and schools continue their relationships with their partner communities through student-directed development plans, distance learning sessions, and student exchange programs.

If the problems are advancing at for-profit speed, so must the solutions! We must get market forces behind the solutions and, most importantly, ensure that corporate mandates are probably aligned with those of the globe. We fully support B Corp’s mission of a sustainable, market-driven future.

I’m still not terribly clear exactly what a B corporation is. However, your emphasis on sustainability and being market driven sounds good to me!

I’ve been following green and socially responsible investing for close to forty years and my website covers the latest relevant global news in this area. Interested readers can go to http://investingforthesoul.com/
